Wheat exports: India to send delegations to 9 countries

India's government said on Thursday that trade teams will go to nine countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, and Indonesia, to investigate ways to increase wheat shipments as the country aims to export 10 million tonnes of the crop by 2022-23.

Under the supervision of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products E., the commerce and industry ministry has established a task group on wheat exports comprising officials from numerous ministries, including commerce, shipping, and railroads, as well as exporters.

"The Centre will dispatch trade delegations to Morocco, Tunisia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Algeria, and Lebanon to investigate ways to increase wheat exports from India."

According to the report, "Amid surging worldwide demand for the crop, India has set a target of producing a record 10 million tonnes of wheat in 2022–23."

The ministry also intends to hold a series of export-related talks in important wheat-growing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Given the increased demand for Indian wheat on the global market, farmers, merchants, and exporters have been asked to adhere to all quality standards set by importing nations so that India may establish itself as a reputable wheat provider.

"We are offering our assistance to all stakeholders in the wheat export value chain in order to increase shipping from the nation," M Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority, said (APEDA).

In 2021-22, India exported a record 7 million metric tons (MT) of wheat worth $2.05 billion.

In the previous fiscal year, Bangladesh received around half of the entire wheat cargo.

According to the ministry, Egypt, one of the world's largest wheat importers, has decided to source wheat from India.

The ministry stated that "Egyptian officials have identified India as one of the origins of this important commodity."

Egypt purchased 6.1 million tones of wheat in 2021, and India was not on the list of certified exporting countries. Russia and Ukraine supply more than 80% of Egypt's wheat imports, which are expected to reach close to $2 billion in 2021.

According to APEDA, exporters have already been notified to register with Egypt's national procurement agency, the General Authority of Supplies and Commodities, which oversees wheat and sugar imports into the North African country.

Exporting Has Its Risks

Using only the export option might be dangerous. It is insufficient to export to a country. To get a better bargain, a buyer or distributor could move to, or threaten to switch to, a lower-cost supplier. You could even be able to manufacture the goods and sell it in your own nation. Local purchasers may believe that organisations who solely export to them are uninterested in providing long-term support and service once the sale is completed. They could decide to buy from a local manufacturer. Many businesses begin to doubt if they need a local presence and instead opt for one of the other entrance possibilities.

Workplace Ethics Food and drug laws vary from country to country. Certain items, notably pharmaceuticals and foods, are frequently subject to local legislation. If a business wishes to sell its product in numerous nations, it must follow all applicable regulations. If the product does not meet the highest standards, the whole cost may increase. Some businesses seek to avoid markets with higher regulatory costs. Is it ethical for a firm to sell a product in a place where the law is broken?
Appraisal, Liquidation, and Classification

Appraisal and categorization are the two essential elements that influence customs duties. When filing an entry, commercial importers must include categorization and valuation. The importer must also give kinds based on statistical suffixes, according to the tariff schedules. Importers must categorise and appraise commodities with reasonable care.

The entry filer is in charge of valuing the Import and Export Data stock and informing the CBP officer. After the evaluation, the CBP officer inputs the item's predetermined price. The import value of imported items shall be determined as follows.

  • The purchase price of the products

  • Transactions involving the same product

  • The transaction value of comparable goods

  • Theoretical value

  • Amount calculated

Liquidation is the last stage in the importation process. Liquidation is the moment at which the CBP officer assesses the amount and rate of duty. The liquidation process must be completed within one year after the entry date. Within 90 days of receiving the notice, an importer can object to the liquidation.
