Major Import and Export Ports in India

The Indian peninsular is one the largest peninsulas in the world has a 7516.6 km coastline. According to the Ministry of Shipping, 95% of India’s trading by volume is done via maritime transport. This is supported through 13 major ports, 187 minor and intermediate ports.

There are 13 major trading ports in India. 12 of which are government-owned and 1 private owned port.  Shipping data from 2018 shows collectively these ports handled over 679 million tons of material with an increase of 4.77% for cargo handled over the previous financial year. The minor ports handled 491.95 million tons of material. The top 5 major trading ports in India are -

Major Export Ports in India are -  

  • Kandla Port is the first economic zone in Asia. The main exports carried out from Kandla are grains, salt, and textiles.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust handles the largest volume of international and domestic container traffic in India. The main exports carried out from JNPT are textiles, carpets, and boneless meat.
  • Paradip Port Trust is an artificial deepwater port located on the eastern coast of the country. The main exports carried out from Paradip are Iron products, unwrought aluminum and chromium ores.
  • Mumbai Port is located in the mainland of west Mumbai. The main exports carried out from here are machinery, petroleum oils, and motor cars.

Vishakhapatnam Port is located on the southeast coast of the country. The main exports carried out from here are seafood, unwrought aluminum, and artificial corundum.

Indian Import data shows that the electric and electronic goods segment is the largest commodity imported into the country. The segment accounted for 21% of the country’s imports. Major Import Ports in India 

  • Cochin Port in Kerala is one of largest ports in the country. The main imports carried out from here are petroleum products, military weapons, and cashewnuts & coconuts.
  • Chennai Port is the second largest port in the country. The main import carried out from here is petroleum products, motor vehicle ancillaries, and sunflower safflower or cotton seed oil.
  • Tuticorin Port in Tamil Nadu. The main imports carried from here are copper ore, Brazil nuts coconuts and cashew nuts, and wood.
  • Kolkata port is the only port with two dock system. The main imports carried out from here are mineral fuel, chemical, and animal or vegetable fat, waxes.
  • Mormugao Port in Goa. The main imports carried out from here are coal, iron ore, and gammon.
  • Panambur Port in Karnataka is a deepwater all weather port. The main imports carried out from here are crude and POL products, timber, and liquid ammonia.
