Major Ports in India

Ports are maritime facilities where ships come in to load or discharge cargo or passengers.  India is blessed with a large coastline of 7516.6 km long. 9 states in India have major trading ports where imports and exports are carried out.  These ports have a high volume of cargo and container traffic throughout the year. There are 13 major trading ports in India (12 owned by the government of India and 1 privately owned) and 200 non-major trading ports.  The trading data shows that India's traffic in major trading ports in India was 699.05 million tons in 2019. Trade at non-major trading ports was 524.03 million tons.  There was strong growth in the non-major trading ports with government initiatives like setting SEZ near these ports spearheading the growth.

The 13 major trading ports in India are

1.     Port NameKandla Port Trust or the Maharao Khengarji Port Trust is the largest port India located on the Gulf of Kutch. It is the first export processing port in India. Last year Kandla handled 115.4 MT of cargo.

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported – Petrochemicals, chemical, iron and steel, and machinery.

Major Products Exported – food grain, salt, and textiles. 

 

2.     Port Name – Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) is also called Nhava Seva is the largest container port in the country. The port handled 70.7 MT of cargo in 2019.

Location- Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra

Trading Type- Import and export

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported – Chemicals, machinery, plastics, vegetable oils, and aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

Major Products Exported – Textiles, sporting goods, carpets, textile machines, boneless meat, and chemicals pharmaceuticals.

3.  Port Name – Mumbai port is a natural harbor port handle 1/5th of India's foreign trade.

Location-  Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported – Chemicals, machinery, plastics, vegetable oils, and aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

Major Products Exported – Textiles, sporting goods, carpets, textile machines, boneless meat, and chemicals pharmaceuticals.

4.Port Name – Vishakhapatnam Port is the second largest port in Andhra Pradesh. It is an all-weather landlocked port. It also has one of the largest shipbuilding and repair industries. Vishakhapatnam port handled 65.3 MT of cargo.

Location- Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported – Mineral oil, coal, luxury items, and industrial products.

Major Products Exported – iron ore, magnesium ore, mineral ore, spices, and woods.

5.Port Name - Chennai Port is the largest port in the Bay of Bengal.  It is the second-largest container port after JNPT. The port handled 53.01 MT of cargo last year. It is an artificial all-weather port with wet docks. 

Location – Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Major Products Imported– Mineral oil, machinery, animal or vegetable fat and organic chemicals.

Major Products Exported– Automobiles, machinery, mineral oils, knitted apparels and clothing accessories and footwear.

6.Port Name - Mormugao Port Trust is a Western India port. It is the major port of Goa. Location – Mormugao Port, Goa.

Trading Type – Import and export

Medium Type– Seaport

Major Products Imported– Wood chips, coal, metal scraps and turning, and potassium carbonate.

Major Products Exported Iron ore, pharmaceutical products, processed fish, cashew nuts, and Indian IMF.

7.Port Name – Port Blair Port is one of India's newest major ports. It is located in the Arabian Sea. Port Blair port is in the jurisdiction of the Kolkata port.

Location- Port Blair, Andaman, and Nicobar Island

Trading Type- Import and export port

Major Products Imported– Processed fish

Major Products Exported – Fish

8.Port NameKolkata Port is situated on the banks of the River Hubli.  The port manages cargo from South-East Asia and Australia. It is the oldest operational port in India.  The port has two docking system Kolkata Docks in Kolkata and the Haldia Dock Complex, a deep water dock in Haldia. Kolkata docks collectively handled 63.71 MT of cargo last year.

Location– Kolkata, West Bengal

Major Products Imported – machinery, crude oil, paper, fertilizer, and chemical products.

Major Products Exported–Jute Products, tea, coal, steel, iron ore, and copper.

9.Port Name – Paradip Port is a deepwater port located on the eastern coast of the country. It is on the junction of the Mahanadi River and the Bay of Bengal.  It is the only port with its railway. Paradip Port handled 109.27 MT last year.

Location– Paradip, Orissa

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported– Petroleum oils, coal, natural calcium phosphates, machinery, and ammonia.

Major Products Exported – Iron Ore, pig iron, ferroalloys, coal, and crustaceans.

10.Port Name –  V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust was called  Tuticorin Port is located in Tamil Nadu. It is the second-largest port in Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest container depot in the country. It is located near the Gulf of Mannar.

Location– Thoothukundi, Tamil Nadu

Trading Type – Import and export

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported– Coal, cement, raw fertilizer material,  rock phosphate, and petroleum products.

Major Products Exported– Refined copper and its alloys, cotton yarn, knitted apparel, and clothing accessories, and scrap precious metal.

11.Port Name–  Cochin port is a major port in the Arabian Sea.

Location  Kochi, Kerala

Trading Type – Import and export

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported– Fertilizer raw material, iron and steel, machinery, newsprint, and food grains.

Major Products Exported– Cashew nut, spices, oil, marine products, and machinery.

12.Port Name – Kamaraja Ports was earlier called Ennore Port is a privately owned port. It is located on the Coromandel Coast.

Location– Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Trading Type – Import and export

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported Petroleum gases, coal, oils, and acetone. 

Major Products Exported– Automobiles, automobile spare parts, and machinery.

13. Port Name –  Panambur Port is on the banks of the Gurupura River. The port is deep water all-weather port. The port handled 42.5 MT of cargo last year,

Location– Mangalore, Karnataka

Trading Type – Import and export

Medium Type – Seaport

Major Products Imported – Petroleum oils and product, palm oil, coal, sunflower seeds, and cotton seeds, and wood.

Major Products Exported – Petroleum oils, coffee, organic chemicals, coconuts, and fish products.

Inland container Depot or ICD are inland points located away from seaports.  ICD was set up to enable importers and exporters to handle their shipment closer to their location to aid the clearance of imported or exported goods. There are 13 inland container depots in India the major ICD are:-

·   Anarpathi   East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh
