Goods & Service Tax (GST) is an indirect tax (consumption tax) imposed in India by the government of India on the supply of goods and services. It is a comprehensive multistage and destination based tax in India. It has almost all the indirect taxes and applied at every stage of the production process so multistage tax. This tax is gathered from the point of consumption so-called a destination based unlike to previous taxes in India.

Goods and services are groups into 5 different slabs for imposing and collecting the Goods & Service Tax - 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Petroleum products, alcoholic drinks, and electricity are not under any slab means no GST for these products and services. There are a few other methods to collect tax on these good & services.

The Council offered a rate finder in the CBEC website. This is a simple search, wherein a business can search suitable GST rate of service or goods by putting in either SAC / HSN code any related keywords about goods or services.

GST HSN Code / HSN Code Under GST

HSN code system is applicable in India after the implementation of this tax. Although India has already been using the HS code system in the Central Excise & Customs regime.

It is a detailed categorization that added another 2 digits to 6-digits structure. There is a requirement to put the HSN code of the item in tax invoice under this tax.

Provisions about HSN under GST are as follows:-
  • In present Government has given some relax to small taxpayers with annual turnover less than or equal to Rs 1.5o crores in the last financial year need not be required to write HSN code in the tax invoice.
  • Taxpayers with turnover more than Rs. 1.5 crore to 5.00 crore needs to put only 2 digits of HSN code.
  • Taxpayers with turnover more than Rs. 5.00 crore need to put 4 digits of HSN code.

GST Rate for Goods

Under this, there are 7 rates slabs for goods, each of which have been classified under a Schedule in the Rates Booklet for Goods. They are given as follows:

  • Schedule First: Nil Rated
  • Schedule Second: 0.25%
  • Schedule Third 3%
  • Schedule Fourth 5%
  • Schedule Fifth: 12%
  • Schedule Sixth: 18%
  • Schedule Seventh: 28%

Under this, there are 5 rates slabs for services; each one has been classified in the Rates Booklet for Services. They are given as follows:

  • Nil Rated
  • 5%
  • 12%
  • 18%
  • 28%
