Spain exported 4.1 million tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables between January and April 2023, an 11% decline from the same time last year. Data from the Department of Customs and Excise show that imports climbed by 17% and totalled 1.47 million tonnes.
Fruit exports decreased by 15% to 1.9 million tonnes, and vegetable exports fell by 7% to 2.3 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same time in 2022.
Fruit imports rose by 21% to total 704,486 tonnes, while vegetable imports rose by 13% to total 771,235 tonnes.
The value of imports and exports has both increased. Exports of fruit and vegetables from Spain increased by 7.4% to 6,968 million euros. Vegetables make up 3,856 million euros (+13%), while fruits make up 3,112 million euros (+1.3%).
Imports climbed by 25% in value to a total of 1,555 million euros. Fruit imports were 1,009 million euro (+22%), while vegetable imports came to 546 million euro (+30%).
According to
export import data the unfavorable weather at the start of the year played a significant role in the reduction in export volume. Exports decreased by 13% in January of this year compared to January 2022, totaling 309,626 tonnes; by 6% in February, 321,890 tonnes; by 20% in March, 449,202 tonnes; and by 17% in April, 395,003 tonnes.
