Guwahati: A significant disparity between the data released by the Tea Board of India and the figures of tea imports into India has prompted the Tea Association of India (TAI) to express grave concerns, suggesting potential widespread violations of current import-export laws.
TAI claims that any tea exported under the name "Indian Tea" or a particular Indian tea-growing region must be 100% Indian in origin in accordance with the Tea (Distribution & Export) Control Order, 2005.
Sandeep Singhania, the president of the TAI, has claimed that imported tea is being mixed and mislabeled as Indian tea, which is obviously against this rule.
Singhania emphasized that there is a tenfold discrepancy between the numbers reported by Indian tea importers and the export data from important origins like Kenya, Nepal, and Vietnam, even though the Tea Board of India has mandated that all importers and exporters declare their transactions on the Tea Council Portal.
