BENGALURU: Apple's 'Made in India' smartphone shipments increased by 65% in volume and 162% in value in 2022, demonstrating the level of manufacturing capacity added in the country.
According to research firm Counterpoint, the value growth increased the brand's value share to 25% in 2022, up from 12% in 2021. The latest iPhones are assembled here by a number of Apple partners, including Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron.
According to media reports, Pegatron is aiming to develop a second facility in Chennai after launching the first six months ago.
Foxconn, the Taiwanese iPhone manufacturer, is rumored to be preparing to establish electronics manufacturing factories in Bengaluru and Telangana.
Oppo had a 22% share of 'Made in India' smartphone shipments in 2022, followed by Samsung. In terms of volume (20%) and value (30%), exports contributed the most to 'Made in India' smartphone shipments in 2022 according to
import export data.
According to Counterpoint Research, growing exports from Apple, Samsung, and other OEMs drove domestically manufactured sales in 2022, offsetting the impact of the local demand reduction.
Overall, 'Made in India' smartphone shipments fell 3% year on year in 2022 (January-December) to 188 million devices, according to the research. Demand slowed as a result of macroeconomic challenges, particularly in the second half of the year. The drop in Q4 was 19%.
However, the government should focus on growth, and the overall ecosystem and play on India's strengths like high local demand, developing local talent, and improving overall infrastructure.
