In New Delhi: According to a formal statement, Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways of the Union Sarbananda Sonowal met with Qatar's Minister of Transport Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti on Monday to discuss ways to improve their bilateral maritime cooperation. 

According to the statement, cooperation between India and Qatar in a variety of industries has been progressively expanding within a great framework fostered by long-standing connections and frequent, meaningful contact.

The statement quoted Sonowal as saying that there had been fruitful discussions on the commitment to strengthen the bilateral maritime cooperation, including interaction between Indian ports and Qatari ports to share best practices in port operations, logistics, supply chain management, and digitalization.

According to export import data, India and Qatar had 15.03 billion dollars’ worth of bilateral trade in 2021–2022. In the years 2021–2022, India exported USD 1.83 billion to Qatar and imported USD 13.19 billion from that country.

The statement went on to say that 2023 will mark 50 years since India and Qatar established full diplomatic ties. From February 5 to 8, 2023, Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti will be in India on an official trip.
