MUMBAI: Import consignments have been stranded in ports and terminals across the country since April 1 due to difficulties in the new payment system.

Brihanmumbai Custom Brokers Association, an industry association representing the western area, has sought government assistance in addressing the issue of non-payment of customs duties on the newly created portal.

It started in a letter to the directorate general of systems and data management, customs and central excise, that making customs duty payments has been problematic because challans are not displayed on ICEGATE.

All import consignments, particularly those containing perishable foods and medications, are disrupted, with agents unable to accept delivery. "This is causing trouble for patients and general turmoil," one industry executive said.

The government admitted that there were issues. "The CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) has reported that members of the trade are having difficulty completing duty payments using the customs automated system. It should be noted that an improved and modern payment system has been operational since April 1, 2023.

In addition to the current modes of payment, the recently released cash ledger module allows users to build a virtual account on the ICEGATE website and act as a form of payment for bespoke responsibilities online.
