Last July, the USDA's animal and plant health inspection service (USDA-APHIS) certified the Gujarat agro radiation processing factory. Farmers and exporters will be able to enhance their exports to the United States. The factory was built by Gujarat Agro Industries Company Ltd (GAIC) in Bavla, near Ahmedabad. Gujarat's kesar and Alphonso mangoes were previously exported via Maharashtra.
USDA-APHIS approved the Bavla radiation processing facility in July, stated a senior GAIC officer. The upcoming mango season will be the first time Gujarat exports mangoes straight to the US market.

According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India sent 813 tonnes of mangoes to the United States last year, valued at Rs 33.68 crore.
According to Hiren Gandhi, former Chairman of the GCCI's food committee, the US requires that mangoes and other food products be irradiated, which kills insects on the fruit. The irradiation plant will assist Gujarat farmers in obtaining higher worldwide rates for their kesar mangoes.
The United States is a large market for mangoes, and high-quality kesar will be in high demand. With this infrastructure, the Australian market would be opened up to direct exports from Gujarat. Irradiating mango also extends its shelf life by at least 25 days.
