PANJIM: To facilitate the import of iron ore from other States for export through the Mormugao Port Authority, the State government has notified a modification to the Goa (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Storage and Transportation of Minerals) Rules, 2013. (MPA).
The idea, which will assist the government in generating more money through a Rs 50 per tone cess, processing fees, and other incidental revenue opportunities, received approval from the Cabinet in December.
In a published notification, Director of Mines Suresh Shanbhogue stated that no person, company, or firm other than an end-user or leaseholder registered under Rule 45 of the Mineral Conservation and Development Rules, 2017, would be permitted to import minerals for use or export within Goa from any State or Union Territory of India or from abroad.
Additionally, he stated that all imports would be made via rail or road at the expense of the importers and under the strict supervision of the Mines Department. The notification specified that registered users would be responsible for storing the mineral and that the lease holders would be in charge of keeping track of it until it reached end-user dockyards, jetty stockyards, or the Mormugao Port Authority.
Separate import permits will be provided, according to the agency, for the import of minerals for domestic use and for export. "Neither the material imported for home use nor the reverse shall be diverted for export. It said that the mineral obtained from any Indian State or Union Territory, whether for domestic use or export, may not be sold to or exchanged with any other person or organization.
Stakeholders had submitted petitions to the state government asking for permission to import iron ore from Karnataka specifically for export from MPA by rail or road. At the moment, only domestic use in Goa is receiving ore imports from Karnataka.
