Discusses opportunities to improve Export-Import trade between the two countries
MUMBAI: South Korean delegation, on a visit to India at the invitation of the Ministry of External Affairs, paid a visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the largest container port in India.
The delegation included a representative from Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port, which is one of the fastest growing South Korean ports providing gateway facilities to large industrial areas of the country.
The Korean delegation met with Shri Anil Diggikar, IAS, Chairman and Shri. Neeraj Bansal, IRS, Deputy Chairman & senior officials of JNPT in Mumbai to discuss various steps to improve trade relations between the two countries.
India is the 13th largest trade partner of South Korea.
Shri Anil Diggikar, IAS, Chairman, JNPT and Shri. Neeraj Bansal, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPT hosted the delegation and shared the salient features of the port and ways to develop new connectivity between India and South Korea.
“India is a major market especially for automobile industry and JNPT is premier container port of India with world class facilities which will facilitate expansion of our business in India,” Mr.Jung Woo Yong, Director, Gyeonggi Provincial Government said.
The delegation led by Mr. Jung Woo Yong included, Kim Jeong Hun, Director General, Kwak Jung Eun, Director General Shin Dong Soo, Director General, Simon Hong, Director and Mr. Jinyoung Jang, Deputy Director General.
Ms. Rajni Rodrigues who heads Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, Mumbai was also part of the meeting.
Chairman Shri Anil Diggikar, IAS, said, “JNPT plays a major role in trade between South Korea and India and assured the delegation of full support and best facilities to ensure seamless business relationship by offering dry port facilities, free trade warehouse zone and also urged the delegation to utilise the upcoming SEZ facilities at JNPT Port”.
Deputy Chairman Shri Neeraj Bansal, IRS highlighted that, “Direct Shipping service between two ports can help in reducing transaction cost and time, making Export-Import trade globally competitive and mutually beneficial. This business opportunity needs to be explored through chamber of commerce of both countries.
It was also explained to the delegation that the simplification in clearance norms by the regulatory agencies has helped in early clearance of cargo, which has very positive impact of reducing transaction cost.
Possibilities of direct service between Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation, & JNPT will reduce transaction and logistic cost.”
Further he said, JNPT has improved transportation, infrastructure and quicker customs clearances, easing the movement of goods between ports and factories.
“Maharashtra is one of the most industrialised state in India and has many opportunities to tie up with South Korea, which will have mutual benefits.
There is great synergy between India & South Korea.” Mr. Bansal added.
Dr. C Unnikrishnan Nair, CMT (Chief Manager Traffic) said, “Apart from bringing investment in several sectors South Korea is very keen to partner with India to convert waste into energy and generate clean energy.”
