Delay in harvest and the price hike due to anticipated sharp decline in output could affect cardamom trade this year. This could impact the initial purchasing in the festive season. The current cardamom price in india is lingering around Rs 800/kg and is estimated to reach up to Rs 1000/ kg after a long gap.
Cardamom is the main spice growing in Kerala. Usually the harvestation of small cardamom starts in july and traders fulfill the festive demands from the month of august and september.
P C Punnoose, GM, Kerala Caradamom Processing and Marketing Co-operative Society quoted “Unusual long summer without sufficient rains has delayed the harvest of cardamom, which will likely be available by the end of August or in September only. The market is currently using the carryover stocks from the past year.
According to unofficial figures, the production of cardamom in India in the previous year was within 30,000 and 35,000 tonnes and is a record. Due to this, the prices had dipped to a value of nearly Rs 550 when the production cost stood nearly at Rs 800 per kg.
