KOLKATA: Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) recorded the highest ever container throughput of over 6 lakh TEUs at Kolkata Dock System (KDS) in the current financial year 2016-17, compared to the previous highest of 5,77,749 TEUs handled in 2015-16.
By the end of the current fiscal, Kolkata Dock System will be able to handle 6,25,000 TEUs.
Incidentally, the container throughput handled by KoPT on March 12, 2017, was the highest ever since inception of containerization at Kolkata Dock System.
Commenting on the volumes, KoPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said that this all time record figures in container handling could be achieved despite the grave operational constraints of low navigational draft in the river, unavoidable ship detentions due to lock operations of the impounded dock, and tide dependence in ship movement - all of which are unique to this river port.
He further added the achievement was possible primarily because of technological upgradation in container handling as well as rigorous marketing drive initiated by the KDS officials.
