  • Kandla Port Successfully Implements Recommendations of Indian Ports Association

GANDHIDHAM: Kandla Port Trust has handled 100 MMT cargoes in the year 2015-16 and maintained its strong position among the Major Ports of India.

In order to further consolidate the position of KPT as the Premier Port of India and to enhance its potential by increasing the efficiency of the Port and thereby extending the benefits to the Port Users; Indian Ports Association, New Delhi, was asked to carry out a study/audit of Navigational Facilities at Kandla Port.

For this purpose, a Committee of IPA visited Kandla Port, Off Shore Oil Terminal (Vadinar) & Tuna Tekra and carried out inspection of infrastructures / facilities available there and examined the performance / functioning. After detailed study/audit of the existing facilities available with the Kandla Port, including its functioning mechanism, the Committee held discussed with the Port Officers on various issues.

They have submitted their report based on their detailed study of the Port and Marine Infrastructure and suggested certain recommendations for implementation by KPT to provide better/enhanced facilities/services for the Trade and Port Users.

After detailed examination of the recommendations suggested by the IPA, Kandla Port has accepted and successfully implemented many of the recommendations thereby resulting in larger vessels with higher draughts being berthed at Kandla.

Consequent upon implementation of certain recommendations of IPA, New Delhi, Kandla Port have issued Circulars to the Trade, as under:-

1.  Container ships with maximum LOA 270m at a draft of 12.5 mtrs. will be permitted to berth at Kandla International Container Terminal.

2.  Vessels (other than container vessels) with maximum LOA of 260 mtrs. at a draft of 12.0 mtrs. will be permitted to berth at Kandla.

3.  Night Navigation maximum permissible LOA increased from 225 mtrs. to 230 mtrs. and draughts from 11.5 mtrs. to 11.75 mtrs.

4.   A draft of 13.0 mtrs. in Kandla channel is now mostly available throughout the year at-least once in a day.

At this point of time, the Port Administration assures that all possible endeavors would be taken by the Port from time to time to provide better quality of services and facilities to the Trade/Port Users.
