CHENNAI : The modernisation of the Tamil Nadu Government owned Cuddalore Port at an investment of Rs115 crores is all set to take off by the end of the year.
A full -fledged all weather port with two alongside berths of nine meters draft is expected to be commissioned in the next two years according to sources.
A vessel with 40,000 dwt requiring 30 feet draft could be brought alongside the port for cargo handling operations once the project is commissioned. Currently the cargo is handled in the midsea and brought to the port in barges.
The proposed port will be a boon for the industries in North Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Government is expected to give port limit notification defining the port limits for the proposed captive trestle jetty being put up by the Cement Major Ramcos at Selanthimangalam in Cuddalore district at a cost of Rs 350 crores.
The trestle jetty will handle five lakh tonnes of cement exports and coal imports a year. The port will be meant for exclusive use of Ramco's cement plant in Ariyalur district in North Tamil Nadu.
The Logistics major ILFS will soon commission a jetty with a capacity to handle ten million tonnes of coal at Parangipettai in Cuddalore district. The jetty will be meant for the captive use of ILFS group which is putting up a 1320 MW thermal plant during the first phase.
The thermal plant is to be commissioned shortly. ILFS has invested a sum of Rs 1350 crores on this project.
