VISAKHAPATNAM : Concerted and coordinated efforts should be made by aqua farmers, fishermen, seafood exporters and the Government agencies to double the exports of marine products from the present $5 billion in the next few years, as there is still a great untapped potential in the country, especially in coastal States such as Andhra Pradesh, according to Union Minister of State for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman.

She was speaking at an interaction session with farmers and seafood exporters organised here on Saturday by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (Mpeda) here on Saturday morning.

She said that the State had made great strides in aquaculture and export of cultured shrimp attained the number one position, but there were still many issues to be addressed.

“We must be particularly conscious of hygiene and quality while exporting seafood and marine products. I have visited the fishing harbour here and things are really in a bad shape. It simply won’t do. We must improve hygiene,” she said.

On the demand to reconstitute the board of the Mpeda, voiced by the Seafood Exporters of India (SEAI), she said action would be taken soon. She also assured the exporters that the Mpeda would play the role of a facilitator and there would not be any excessive or unreasonable regulation.
