  • Export Hub Turns Into Dumping Yard

A two-acre site at the export hub in Udyog Vihar Phase I has become a dumping yard, posing a threat to the health of employees working in the area.

The hub comprises about 50 to 60 export units, with over 100 workers each. Many of them have stopped working in the area owing to the threat of dengue and malaria. When this correspondent visited the site, garbage was found dumped there, sometimes burned in the open. The MCG dumps the garbage from neighbouring areas at the site, allege employees. This garbage then gets accumulated for over a week.

"We are at the risk of contracting many diseases. Many who landed other jobs have left, but others like us have no option but to continue working here," said a worker.

An MCG official said the site has not been handed over to the corporation. Gurgaon Udyog Association president Praveen Yadav, however, said, "The place was handed over to the MCG from Haryana state industrial and infrastructure development corporation (HSIIDC) over a year ago. Most units have started hiring private sweepers."

Despite several calls and messages, MCG joint commissioner Y S Gupta remained unavailable for a comment.
