Food ministry's plan to ban onion export shot down

NEW DELHI: Food ministry's proposal to put a ban on export of onion was shot down by other departments at the meeting of committee of secretaries (CoS) , sources said.

The issue had come up for discussion at the CoS meeting, headed by cabinet secretary Ajit Seth, to review price rise. Government officials said secretaries from commerce, expenditure and agriculture did not support putting an official ban on onion export than taking steps to discourage the key kitchen staple going out of the country. Sources said a decision on import of onion would be taken soon.
